Microphlebectomy

Microphlebectomy

Microphlebectomy or ambulatory phlebectomy is a minimally invasive method to surgically remove surface varicose veins. This technique has replaced the standard phlebectomy where the incision was one to two inches intead of an 1/8 of an inch long. Because the incision was much longer, the discomfort was that much greater and the cosmetic results were not good. This used to always be done under general anesthesia in the hospital. Now this is often an in-office procedure under Tumescent (local) anesthesia. Very small micro incisions are made in the skin lines (using a technique we have devised at The Vein & Esthetic Centre), a hook is used to pull out the vein, where it is grasped and removed. The downtime is nil, the discomfort is minimal and the scars are nearly imperceptible.

Microphlebectomy is often done in conjunction with endovenous laser ablation.

After the procedure, you will be asked to:

  • Walk immediately-go shopping
  • Walk often
  • Wear compression hose for 48 hours.
  • After the first 48 hours wear your hose whenever you are up, for a total of two weeks
  • Cool your legs before you get out of a warm shower or bath
  • Most patients are able to go back to work the next day
